Organic Acid Testing

The Organic Acid Test examines metabolites found in a patient's urine that are byproducts and intermediates of cellular and gut microbiome metabolism. It can reveal imbalances in metabolic pathways, nutritional imbalances, mitochondrial dysfunction, urea cycle imbalance, oxidative stress as well as abnormal gastrointestinal microbial dysbiosis and malabsorption in the small and large intestines.  It's extremely useful for helping children with autism and Down syndrome. The organic acid test can help guide an experienced physician in making recommendations regarding diet, supplementation and other treatment.

Some believe that the biochemical, vitamin and nutritional needs are the same for every child with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This is not the case. They are all as beautifully unique as anyone else. There are many factors that contribute to the health, cognition and vitamin needs of these children and adults.  Some of these factors include the state of their microbiome and their other 45 chromosomes. The role the extra chromosome plays in biochemical processes within the body cannot be ignored, but must be combined with other aspects of physiology that contribute to health when determining supplements given to children.

Below is a collection of resources to help parents and other practitioners when using this test for their child or patients.
